Chores

AJ will be 4 at the end of September, and he just started in his new class at daycare. I know there will be new rules and new expectations, so Hubby and I want to set up some more responsibilities at home, too. We bought a little "chore chart" to put stickers on. He gets a sticker for each day that he does that assigned task. He will earn rewards like a trip to Baskin & Robbins for ice cream, going to the park, and taking a trip to the zoo.

Now we just have to come up with some chores for him to do. I just don't know how much to expect out of him without setting him up for failure or frustration. What should a 4 year old be expected to do on a regular basis?

I'm open to suggestions...

Aaron has to put napkins out on the dinner table, clean his toys up in his room, and he helps me distribute the clean clothes to the appropriate bed rooms. He even puts his clothes away. Granted they usually don't stay folded, but it's a start.

ditto what nikki said. Matching socks is good too.

Kayleigh actually loves doing dishes. To me its a mess and takes too much time but I have to let her start growing up.

She also cleans her room and feeds the dogs before bed time. Since she is 5, she really wants to help with everything so you have to give them a chance.

You could let him set the table for dinner and help you load the dish washer. He could help you get the mail as well.

Hope this helps! How is he doing, did the ear infection and the spots go away?

He helps me unload the dishwasher now and then. And he's pretty good about clearing the table when he is finished eating. However, I often find his plate and utensils in the trash since they eat on paper plates at school and throw them in the trash when they're done...

BTW - the HSP and ear infection are all done!

A 4 year old can definitely take his plastic plate to the sink. He can put his shoes on a special spot on his shelf. Other great suggestions are already in your comments, I see. :)
